Barclays U21s: Liverpool close in on leaders

Jack Dunn brace beats West Ham as Lucas Leiva and Mamadou Sakoh make successful return

  • Jack Dunn, 19, scored in each half to secure Liverpool the win

West Ham United 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool closed the gap on Fulham, the Barclays Under-21 Premier League leaders, to one point with victory over West Ham United at Grays Athletic FC.

The match also marked successful returns from injury for two of Liverpool’s first-team squad, Lucas Leiva and Mamadou Sakho, who played the whole match and 70 minutes respectively.

Both goals for Alex Inglethorpe’s side came from Jack Dunn, 19, who hails from Liverpool. Dunn’s first, just before the break, was fortunate in that he deflected Kristoffer Peterson’s shot past Ralph Spiegel. His second goal owed nothing to fortune as Jordan Lussey found Cameron Brannagan down the left and his cross was turned in by Dunn.

In the opening stages it was West Ham who had the best chances to open the scoring through Elliott Lee, who was first denied by Yusuf Mersin in the Liverpool goal and then hit a post.

West Ham, who would have overtaken Liverpool had they won, remain fifth with 27 points from 16 matches, while Liverpool, who have 31 points from 15 matches, will go top if they win their fixture in hand.
