Manuel Pellegrini has spoken out in praise of Manchester City’s two new signings. The new Manchester City manager, who officially started his job at the Etihad Stadium yesterday, explained the reasoning behind the acquisitions of Jesus Navas from Sevilla and Fernandinho from Shakhtar Donetsk.
"Jesus is quick, has excellent technique and City fans will enjoy watching him play"
“Jesus is a player I know well from La Liga and he is someone I have admired for a long time,” Pellegrini told the Manchester City website. “He is quick, has excellent technique and the City fans will enjoy watching him play. He will provide a variety of attacking options for us and he can also score goals as well as create them for others. He is an excellent signing for the club.
“Jesus is a world and European champion and a regular squad member in a very special Spain team. I’m very happy that he was one of my first signings as Manchester City manager and I think he will excite our supporters.”
On Fernandinho, Pellegrini believes that the Brazilian will add a new dimension to the City midfield.
“I made Fernandinho one of the top priorities,” Pellegrini said. “He has impressed me on a number of occasions over the past few years and is another player I’ve taken a keen interest in.
“He is an experienced international who will further strengthen our midfield and he will be well suited to the Premier League. He is a superb athlete with a wide range of passing, can score goals and most importantly, can quickly turn defence into attack. He has ambition and hunger and he is another excellent addition to the current squad.
"Both Jesus and Fernandinho add pace and skill to a talented and successful squad"
Pellegrini is hoping that these two acquisitions will gel with the existing squad as City look to regain the Barclays Premier League title they won in the 2011/12 season.
“Both Jesus and Fernandinho add pace and skill to what is already a very talented and successful squad," he said. "I am looking forward to working with both our new signings and to working with the players who have already won a Premier League title together.
“We have a very strong pool and together we aim to achieve great things.”
Fans of the Barclays Premier League in Hong Kong get an early chance to see how Navas and Fernandinho will fit into the City side when the club take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy on the island from 24 July. Pellegrini’s side take on South China in the semi-finals on 24 July before playing Premier League opposition in Tottenham Hotspur or Sunderland on 27 July.
