Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign the Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela for an undisclosed fee.
"It is a shame to see him go but you cannot deny him the opportunity to join a club like this"
Jorge Da Silva
The Barclays Premier League champions decided to swoop for the 20-year-old right-back, who plays for Atletico Penarol, after he impressed on trial.
Varela, who has made just one appearance for the Uruguayan Primera Division club but has claimed nine Under-20 caps for his country, becomes the first signing by David Moyes as Manchester United manager after replacing his retired predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson.
'Guillermo will immediately join up with the Uruguay Under-20 squad for the upcoming FIFA Under-20 World Championship in Turkey,' read a statement on the club’s official website, www.manutd.com.
“This is what he deserves,” said Penarol head coach Jorge Da Silva. “It is a shame to see him go but you cannot deny him the opportunity to join a club like this.”
