Swansea City have extended the loan of Jonathan de Guzman for another season from Villarreal. The news of the one-year deal was confirmed by the club’s chairman Huw Jenkins.

“Everyone is happy the loan is continuing,’’ Jenkins told the Swansea website. “Then Jonathan will review his long-term future next summer.’’

De Guzman, 25, played in all but one of Swansea matches in the Barclays Premier League last season, scoring five times. He got two goals as Swansea won the Capital One Cup in February, the club’s first major trophy. His performances for Swansea helped him to make his international debut for the Netherlands last season.

“I had a great year at Swansea,’’ De Guzman said, before the loan was confirmed. “The people around the club and the fans treated me well.

“It was not just the results we had; it was more about showing we can also compete with the big teams. We played better against the bigger teams. We played well in a lot of games. We played good football and it’s refreshing playing in a team that has a good football mind.

“I’m very satisfied with what happened. We did very well – we were very creative. We really put Swansea on the map.”

De Guzman is the manager Michael Laudrup’s third signing this summer, all from Spanish clubs, after Jordi Amat (from Espanyol) and Jose Canas (from Real Betis).
