Manchester City have announced the signing of Fernandinho. The 28-year-old midfielder has joined from Shakhtar Donetsk and will wear the No 25 shirt.
Fernandinho is a defensive midfielder who brings UEFA Champions League experience to City, having appeared in the competition with Shakhtar for the past eight seasons. During the past campaign he appeared in all Shakhtar’s eight matches in the competition, scoring past Chelsea in the 2-1 win in Ukraine. He has played five times for Brazil but his last appearance was in February last year.
"Playing for a huge club in a huge league makes me so happy"
"This is a change, a challenge and a chance that I have been waiting a long time for,” Fernandinho told the City website. “Playing in the Premier League for City is like a dream.
“My ambition here is to win all the titles, the team here is strong, and so is the greatness of the club and the supporters. Professionally this is a spectacular thing. Playing for a huge club in a huge league makes me so happy. I hope I will be able to repay City for what they have done for me.
“I know I will face challenges but I am prepared for them. Every player at a high level faces pressure and must respond and I am ready for that too. I know a lot about City. Ever since they expressed an interest in me, I have been learning more.”
Fernandinho is City’s first signing of the summer as they plan ahead for next season and seek to regain the title they won in 2011/12 and Barclays Premier League fans will be able to see him in action when City come to Hong Kong for the Barclays Asia Trophy.
Tickets are still available for 24 July's matches, when City face Hong Kong champions South China and Tottenham Hotspur take on Sunderland. Click here for more information on getting tickets.
