Cisse and Toure make World Cup qualifying mark

Several players from English top-flight involved in Saturday qualifiers including Yaya Toure

  • Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure was on target for Ivory Coast against Gambia

Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse scored for Senegal as several players from the Barclays Premier League were involved in FIFA World Cup qualifying action on Saturday.

Cisse opened the scoring midway through the first half as a Senegal side including West Ham United midfielder Mohamed Diame took the lead against Angola in Round 2 of qualifying from the African zone. Though Angola battled back to earn a 1-1 draw Senegal remain top of Group J after four matches.

The Ivory Coast also top their section thanks to a 3-0 success against Gambia. Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure contributed the third goal of the game in the final minute to ensure the Elephants moved four points clear in Group C.

In European qualifying, Switzerland left it late to win their World Cup qualifier with a last-minute goal by Haris Seferovic in Geneva. Arsenal defender Johan Djourou helped the Swiss keep a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over Cyprus. Ottmar Hitzfeld's charges stretched their Group E lead to four points after six matches.
