Vito Mannone completes switch to Sunderland

Goalkeeper moves from Arsenal as Paolo Di Canio continues summer recruitment drive

Vito Mannone could make his Sunderland debut at this month's Barclays Asia Trophy

Goalkeeper Vito Mannone says he is excited by the potential of his new club after completing his transfer to Sunderland from Arsenal. The 25-year-old has signed a two-year contract after moving to the Stadium of Light for an undisclosed fee.

"I waited a long time for an opportunity like Sunderland, and for me it is a great one," he told the club's website. "I am here to work hard and to show what I can do.

"The potential [of the club] is incredible. I have come from a big club but to be honest I don’t see any difference in the facilities. From what I can see on my first day they are brilliant.

"To have good facilities where you can work and improve is something every club wants to achieve. The base is there and I am really happy to be here."

The Italian joined the Gunners from Atalanta in 2005 and made a total of 15 Barclays Premier League appearances for the club. He has made seven appearances in the UEFA Champions League and had loan spells at Barnsley and Hull City.

Mannone will now battle for the No 1 jersey with Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

"Of course, every player knows they have competition," Mannone said. "We live in a world of competition. I will work and do my best to be in the first XI, and then the manager will decide. All I can do is try to show what I am capable of."

Mannone, who could make his Sunderland debut at the Barclays Asia Trophy later this month, is head coach Paolo Di Canio’s fifth signing of the summer, after the captures of Cabral, Modibo Diakite, Valentin Roberge and David Moberg Karlsson.
