Swansea sign Bony for club record fee

Prolific Ivory Coast international signs for Swans from Vitesse Arnhem for fee of £12m

Wilfried Bony had a superb season for Vitesse Arnhem last season

Swansea City have continued their summer recruitment drive with the signing of Ivory Coast striker Wilfried Bony for a club-record £12m fee from Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

The 24-year-old has signed a four-year deal after completing his medical at the club's training camp in the Netherlands, with the move subject to work-permit approval.

Bony comes with an impressive reputation for goalscoring, having produced 31 goals from 30 matches to help his side finish fourth in the Eredivisie table. He was the league’s top scorer and also won the Dutch Player of the Year title.

"I considered everything and Swansea came out on top"

"This move has been talked about for quite some time, so I am delighted it is all completed," Bony told the club's website. "Now it is important that I focus my mind on the challenge ahead because I hope to make the Swansea fans very happy.

"I watched Swansea a lot last season on TV. They have some good players and I like the way they play. I appreciate the style, which is similar to the Dutch way, and I think being at Swansea will help me develop as a player.

"I chose Swansea because it is a good club with a corresponding style, a great manager and, of course, playing in the Premier League. I considered everything and Swansea came out on top."

The fee is a significant increase on the previous Swansea transfer record of £5.55m paid for winger Pablo Hernandez last summer.

Bony began his career in his homeland before signing for Sparta Prague, initially on loan, but then on a permanent deal, in 2007. He won the Czech First League in 2010 and in January 2011 made the switch to Vitesse Arnhem.

The striker, who is Swansea's eighth summer signing, has 20 caps for his country, scoring eight goals, and helped the Ivory Coast reach the quarter-finals of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Swans have so far completed deals for Jose Canas of Real Betis and Jordi Amat of Espanyol; NK Domzale's Gregor Zabret and Olympiakos's Alex Gogic; Alejandro Pozuelo of Real Betis, Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey and midfielder Jonathan De Guzman, who agreed a new season-long loan deal from Villarreal.

Swansea fans can look forward to seeing Bony in action on Saturday 17 August when Swansea host Manchester United live on television in their opening Barclays Premier League match of the 2013/14 season.
