Manchester City have announced their squad for the 2013 Barclays Asia Trophy with new signings Fernandinho and Jesus Navas among the 32 players booked on the trip to Hong Kong.
"I want to repay the club by playing well on the pitch and winning as many matches and trophies as possible"
While new manager Manuel Pellegrini has promised that more signings are on the way, Navas and Fernandinho represent two major strokes of summer transfer business and fans can expect to see these exciting new arrivals when they turn out for the tournament which takes place at Hong Kong Stadium on 24 and 27 July.
Fernandinho is an all-round midfielder who impressed for Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League last season. Comfortable on the ball and strong in the tackle, the 28-year-old South American is as adept at breaking up play at one end as he is driving forward at the other and the Brazil international is clearly determined to win silverware at his new club, beginning with the Barclays Asia trophy.
"It was very important for me [to be City's top close-season target] and I want to repay the club for what they have done for me by playing well on the pitch and winning as many matches and as many trophies as possible," he told a news conference on Wednesday.
Navas, meanwhile, is no stranger to success, having won two UEFA Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, two Copa Del Rey titles and the Spanish Super Cup, all with Sevilla. He was also part of the Spain squad who won the FIFA World Cup in 2010, coming on for last 30 minutes in the final against the Netherlands, and UEFA Euro 2012.
The 27-year-old, who has 27 caps for his country, helped Spain reach the FIFA Confederations Cup final last month, displaying electric pace that will have South China’s full-backs on full alert when they are charged with the task of stopping him in the 24 July semi-final. Argentina forward Sergio Aguero and Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko, who will also shortly be on their way to Hong Kong, will hope to benefit from Navas’s pinpoint deliveries.
While supporters can expect to see stellar talents such as David Silva, Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri, Vincent Kompany and Joe Hart, the Barclays Asia Trophy is also a chance for City to blood some emerging young players, such as Denis Suarez and Devante Cole.
Suarez, who was City's Young Player of the Year for 2011/12, continued to show a sharp eye for goal in the inaugural Barclays Under-21 Premier League last season and appeared for Spain at this summer’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup. Cole is a promising striker of great pedigree who is looking to follow in the footsteps of his famous father Andy Cole, a City player in the 2005/06 season.
After their encounter with South China, Pellegrini’s side will face Tottenham Hotspur or Sunderland at Hong Kong Stadium on 27 July.
A limited number of tickets are still available for semi-finals day and can be bought here.
