Chelsea have signed goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on a free transfer. The 40-year-old makes the short journey across south west London having been released by Fulham and the Australian was delighted with the move.

"It's one of the biggest and best clubs in the world, and it's an honour to sign for Chelsea," he told the Chelsea website. "I didn't take much convincing to come here.

"There were other interests but once I knew Chelsea was interested it was very much the case that I wanted to try and make it happen. Chelsea Football Club is an enormous club and I think a club that can re-establish itself as the best club in the country. It has an unbelievable manager and an unbelievable squad of players and it's very exciting."

Schwarzer has been in England since 1996, when he joined Bradford City, then moving a year later to Middlesbrough in the Barclays Premier League. After more than 330 League matches in the North East, Schwarzer moved to Fulham, where a further 172 League appearances took him into the elite "500 club", the first player from overseas to reach the landmark. He has 108 caps for Australia, whom he helped to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

He is the third signing of the summer by new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, after Marco van Ginkel and Andre Schurrle arrived at Stamford Bridge.
