FA Cup: 99 not out for Manchester City

City run riot as Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko score twice and Sergio Aguero scores on return

  • Alvaro Negredo has now produced seven goals in his last four matches in all competitions

  • Sergio Aguero scores with his second touch of the ball after a month out injured

  • Edin Dzeko plants his first strike of the evening into the roof of the net

Manchester City cruised into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 5-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers that took their tally for the season in all competitions to 99 goals.

It was City's strikers who did the damage with Alvaro Negredo and Eden Dzeko scoring twice each and Sergio Aguero marking his return from injury after a month out with a calf injury by scoring with his first contribution of the match.

Though the scoreline was ultimately comprehensive it took City until time added on at the end of the first half to break the deadlock, when Negredo headed in Fernandinho's pinpoint cross, and the Spaniard doubled the hosts' advantage two minutes after the interval.

Though Blackburn twice came close through Joshua King, the game was up once Dzeko converted his 14th goal of the season, meeting Jesus Navas' cutback midway through the second period.

Aguero came on for Negredo five minutes later and with his first touch controlled Gael Clichy's pass, before firing past Simon Eastwood with his second. Dzeko rounded off the scoring 11 minutes from time, with the help of another Navas assist, to set up a fourth-round tie for the 2011 FA Cup winners at home against Watford.
