As Chelsea prepare to host Manchester United in one of the biggest fixtures of the Barclays Premier League season, takes a look at the history of the fixture at Stamford Bridge.

It is a match that has grown in stature over the last 10 years but it has always been a meeting that tends to produce dramatic, entertaning affairs. On home soil Chelsea have an overall advantage over Manchester United, a record that has been helped by success in recent seasons.

Manchester United ended a 10-year wait for a Barclays Premier League win at Stamford Bridge after Javier Hernandez came off the bench to score the winner against nine-man Chelsea.

2011/12: Chelsea 3-3 Manchester United

Hernandez was again the saviour for Manchester United as they came from 3-0 down to claim a point in west London.

2010/11: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

David Luiz scored his first Chelsea goal before a Frank Lampard penalty cancelled out Wayne Rooney's opener. Nemanja Vidic was sent off for United in injury time.

2009/10: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

John Terry scored the only goal, helping Chelsea to a 10th straight home Barclays Premier League victory.

2008/09: Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United

United threatened to end Chelsea’s 84-match unbeaten home league record for over an hour before Salomon Kalou's 80th-minute equaliser.

2007/08: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

A brace from Michael Ballack set up a dramatic season finale as Chelsea went level on points with league leaders Manchester United with two matches remaining.

2006/07: Chelsea 0-0 Manchester United

With United crowned league champions, the teams played out a goalless draw ahead of their FA Cup Final 10 days later.

2005/06: Chelsea 3-0 Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea beat United to secure their second successive Barclays Premier League title, although the match was overshadowed by a serious injury to Rooney ahead of the FIFA World Cup finals in Germany.

2004/05: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

Jose Mourinho got off to a winning start as Chelsea manager as Eidur Gudjohnsen scored the winner after 14 minutes.

2003/04: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

A first-half Frank Lampard penalty gave Claudio Ranieri's Chelsea victory to send them top of the Barclays Premier League against the reigning champions.

2002/03: Chelsea 2-2 Manchester United

Ryan Giggs rescued a point for United with his 100th goal for the club as the away side twice came from behind, with David Beckham also on the scoresheet for the visitors.

2001/02: Chelsea 0-3 Manchester United

A stunning Paul Scholes goal followed by strikes from Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskaer helped United to a convincing win, in what turned out would be their last victory at Stamford Bridge for 10 years.

2000/01: Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United

Andrew Cole equalised after an error from Paul Scholes allowed Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to score the opener for Chelsea.

1999/00: Chelsea 5-0 Manchester United

Manchester United’s 29-match unbeaten run came crashing to an end at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea swept them aside. Gus Poyet scored twice and Nicky Butt was sent off for the away side after just 23 minutes.

1998/99: Chelsea 0-0 Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson could not beat Gianluca Vialli’s Chelsea and the two teams played out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the final match of the calendar year.

1997/98: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United

Phil Neville scored the only goal after 31 minutes as Manchester United won their third match in a row to maintain their position at the top of the table.

1996/97: Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United

Gianfranco Zola put Chelsea ahead after just two minutes but the Blues were unable to end the league leaders' 14-match unbeaten run as Beckham scored a second-half equaliser.

1995/96: Chelsea 1-4 Manchester United

Scholes scored twice in the opening 10 minutes to send United on their way to victory. Frank Sinclair was sent off for Chelsea in injury time.

1994/95: Chelsea 2-3 Manchester United

In a thrilling Boxing Day clash at Stamford Bridge, Mark Hughes and Eric Cantona put United ahead before John Spencer and Eddie Newton brought Chelsea level. But with 12 minutes remaining Brian McClair scored a late winner for the visitors.

1993/94: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

A first-half goal from Gavin Peacock was enough to secure victory for Glenn Hoddle in his first match against United as Chelsea manager. It was the only defeat United suffered in their first 29 matches of the season, before Chelsea beat them 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in March.

1992/93: Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United

The first Barclays Premier League tie between the two teams ended in a stalemate. David Lee put Ian Porterfield’s Chelsea ahead in the second half but Eric Cantona equalised just four minutes later.
