U21 Cup: Exeter sink Blackburn as giant-killing goes on

Category 3 Academy claim another Category 1 scalp after 2-1 win over Rovers

Exeter City U21s have now knocked out Crystal Palace, Southampton and Blackburn Rovers

Exeter City's extraordinary giant-killing run in the Under-21 Premier League Cup continued on Wednesday night as they overcame Blackburn Rovers to reach the quarter-finals.

The Category 3 Academy, who had knocked out Crystal Palace and Southampton in previous rounds, claimed another Category 1 scalp by coming from behind to beat Blackburn at St James' Park.

Jordan Preston had given Rovers the lead against the run of play with a header late in the first half from Raheem Hanley's cross, but Exeter rallied after the break, converting their dominance into goals early in the second period, firstly from captain for the night Scot Bennett and then Jimmy Keohane.

Bennett, who has 88 first-team appearances, put the Grecians level when Keohane's corner was turned back towards goal. Soon afterwards Keohane got on the end of a fine cross by full-back Aaron Dawson for the deciding goal.

Exeter laid siege to Rovers' goal and might have extended their advantage through Jake Gosling and Matt Jay, only for a superb display by Rovers goalkeeper David Raya to deny them a more convincing winning margin.
