Grant Holt joins Paul Lambert at Aston Villa

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Wigan Athletic striker Grant Holt on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Holt moves to Villa Park to work again under Paul Lambert, who managed him during his two seasons in the Barclays Premier League with Norwich City before joining Wigan last summer. The 32-year-old was a key part of Lambert’s Canaries side who won back-to-back promotions from League One into the Barclays Premier League and the Villa manager is looking forward to having the striker strengthen a forward line hit by a season-ending broken leg for Libor Kozak.

"If Holt can replicate what he did at Norwich over these next few months here at Villa, he'll make an impact"

“When I knew Grant had become available it was something I wanted to pursue quickly because he'll add strength and experience to what is still a young squad overall,” Lambert told Aston Villa’s official website. “Having worked with him for three years at Norwich, I know what he can do and that's important.

"Coming back into the Premier League will rekindle that desire in him to succeed again at this level and, if he can replicate what he did in those three years at Norwich over these next few months here at Villa, then he'll make an impact, that's for sure.”

Holt scored 23 goals in 70 Barclays Premier League appearances for Norwich after gaining promotion. The forward is the first arrival at Villa Park in the January transfer window and he is delighted to be back playing for Lambert.

"To be able to come back into the Premier League, especially at a club as big as Villa, is fantastic and it's an opportunity for me to work with the gaffer and his staff again as well,” Holt said. "He's able to get the best out of people, there's no doubt about that.

“I know what he wants to achieve here in the long-term and I know what he expects. I know what he expects on the training ground and I'm looking forward to working with him over the coming months to try to help things along and to consolidate the club's position.”

Holt is available for immediate selection in the Aston Villa squad for their next Barclays Premier League fixture away to Liverpool on Saturday 18 January.
