Barclays U21s: Reds close in on summit with Anfield rout

Liverpool up to second in Barclays U21 Premier League thanks to 4-0 home win over Wolves

  • Viljan Bijev of Liverpool takes on Wolves' Jim Kellerman at Anfield

  • Jordan Lussey was the scorer of Liverpool's third goal

  • Jordan Rossiter rounds of the scoring for the Reds with a measured finish

Liverpool 4-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Liverpool made the most of an opportunity to run out at Anfield under the watchful eye of first-team manager Brendan Rodgers by completing a 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers that keep their Barclays Under-21 Premier League title hunt firmly on course.

It took until a minute before half-time before the Reds broke the deadlock, but they did so in style as Jack Dunn unleashed a fierce 25-yard strike past Jonathan Flatt, and four minutes into the second period they were already three goals to the good thanks to an own goal by Dominic Iorfa and a fine header by Jordan Lussey from Villyan Bijev’s pinpoint cross.

Jordan Rossiter then added gloss to the scoreline with a composed finish at the conclusion of a remarkable passage of play, riding a series of tackles before side-footing the ball into the goal at the Kop End.

The win takes Alex Inglethorpe's charges, still unbeaten in 2014, up to second place in the table. Just three point behind leaders Fulham with two matches in hand.
