Sunderland add to defence with Alonso signing

Former Bolton defender returns to England to join Sunderland from Fiorentina

Alonso is moving to Sunderland from Fiorentina, whom he joined in the summer

Sunderland have confirmed that Marcos Alonso will join from Fiorentina on 1 January until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old defender started his career with Real Madrid, before spending three years with Bolton Wanderers, where he made nine Barclays Premier League appearances. After Bolton were relegated he won the the club's Player of the Season for the 2012/13 campaign.

Alonso moved to Fiorentina in the summer and made eight appearances for the Serie A club.

"Marcos is a player that I have known well for a very long time," Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet said. "He was desperate to come and play for Sunderland and he is a player I am excited to work with."

The Spaniard is not eligible to face Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League on 1 January but could make his Sunderland debut in the FA Cup against Carlisle United on 5 January.
