Newcastle United joined Manchester City in the last eight of the Premier League Under-21 Cup thanks to a brace from Adam Armstrong against Leicester City on Monday night.
The England Under-17 forward impressed a crowd at Whitley Park of almost 400, including first-team assistant manager John Carver and first-team coach Steve Stone, as well as first-team captain Fabricio Coloccini, with a goal in each half to put United 2-0 up.
Jonas Gutierrez set up Armstrong for the first, after 41 minutes. The second for the forward came with 12 minutes remaining and Adam Dawson's goal was merely a consolation for Leicester, as when visiting goalkeeper Adam Smith came up for a corner in added time he could only head wide.
A strong second-half performance by Wolverhampton Wanderers helped them recover from a 2-1 deficit to win a five-goal thriller at Everton just before Christmas.
The home side appeared on course for a place in the last eight when Chris Long struck either side of a goal by Eusebio Bancessi, but four minutes after the interval Ismail Zeli capitalied on hesitation in the Toffees rearguard to poke in an equaliser, and Kristian Kostrna thumped a poor clearance back past Mason Springthorpe from 25 yards.
Burnley eased into the quarter-finals with a convincing derby win over Bolton Wanderers at Turf Moor on 23 December.
The visitors dominated proceedings and saw off Wanderers thanks to goals from Cameron Howieson, Jason Gilchrist and Jamie Frost.
New Zealand international Howieson opened his account for the season with a fierce 27th-minute drive and Gilchrist doubled the advantage 10 minutes into the second half. Frost then sealed a last-eight berth with a firm, far post header eight minutes from time.
Reading's round-of-16 encounter with Watford was postponed due to adverse weather conditions.
