Liverpool sealed their second win in as many Barclays Premier League matches with a narrow victory over Aston Villa while there were first successes of the campaign for Arsenal and Hull City on Saturday.
Brendan Rodgers' side edged Aston Villa 1-0 in a hard-fought contest at Villa Park. Daniel Sturridge got the only goal of the game – his second in as many matches – and Liverpool had to withstand some late pressure as the Reds held out to secure the three points.
In the day’s early-kick-off Arsenal gained their first Barclays Premier League win when they beat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage. A brace from Lukas Podolski and the opening goal from Olivier Giroud secured the spoils for the Gunners. Debutant Darren Bent scored Fulham's consolation.
Hull claimed their first victory after promotion back into the Barclays Premier League when they beat Norwich City 1-0 at the KC Stadium despite being a man down for more than a half.
Robbie Brady scored the only goal for Steve Bruce's side, from the penalty spot, but the hosts had to hang on after Yannick Sagbo was sent off for an off-the-ball incident during the first half.
Stoke City also won for the first time, coming from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1. Marouane Chamakh had given Palace a half-time lead at the Britannia Stadium but goals in the second half from Charlie Adam and Ryan Shawcross turned the match round for Mark Hughes’ side.
Southampton were grateful for Jose Fonte’s late header to avoid defeat at home to Sunderland. The defender headed in four minutes from time after Emanuele Giaccherini had given the visiting side an early lead with a header from a corner.
In the two other 3pm kick-offs Everton secured their second draw of the season when they were held 0-0 by West Bromwich Albion at Goodison Park. It was a similar score at St James' Park where West Ham United frustrated Newcastle United, who got their first point of the season.
