Burnley secure promotion to the Barclays Premier League

Victory over Wigan Athletic means Lancashire club return to division where they played in 2009/10

Michael Kightly celebrates Burnley's second goal against Wigan

Burnley have secured promotion to the Barclays Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Championship. The Lancashire club will be returning to England's top flight for the first time since 2010.

First-half goals from Ashley Barnes and Michael Kightly put Sean Dyche’s team eight points ahead of third-place Derby with two matches to go and meant that they would go up with Leicester City .

Burnley sealed promotion via the play-offs in 2009, their first time in the top flight for 33 years. Despite a brand of entertaining football under Owen Coyle, which included a home win over Manchester United (to watch click here), they were relegated after a single season. (For their results from that season click here) With a population of less than 90,000, Burnley will be the smallest town with a Barclays Premier League club.

"We were intent on getting promoted ourselves, not having to rely on anyone else for help,” Dyche said. "It's getting harder to win automatic promotion to the Premier League because of all the constraints on teams like ourselves. I'm extremely proud."

One more team will be promoted from the Championship via the play-offs, for which Derby County and Queens Park Rangers are assured of their places.
