Lukas Podolski scored his second goal in as many matches for Arsenal against Southampton
The goals rained at Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal scored six and Manchester United hit four at the expense of Southampton and Wigan Athletic respectively, while Manchester City and Chelsea were both held at Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers.
It was a memorable day for the young and the old at Manchester United as Paul Scholes celebrated his 700th appearance for the club with the opening goal against Wigan. There were second-half strikes for Javier Hernandez and debutants Alexander Buttner and Nick Powell as the hosts completed a 4-0 win.
It was even plainer sailing for the Gunners against a Southampton side who scored two own goals. Gervinho was twice on target as Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott also got on the scoresheet in a 6-1 win.
Elsewhere, Javi Garcia was another goalscoring debutant but the Barclays Premier League champions were unable to find a winner after the Manchester City defender had cancelled out Peter Crouch's strike for hosts Stoke.
Meanwhile, Chelsea dropped their first points of the campaign with a goalless draw at QPR, while Swansea City, second at the start of the day, succumbed to their first defeat at Aston Villa, whose 2-0 victory was their first win of the campaign.
Fulham ran out 3-0 winners at home against West Bromwich Albion as Dimitar Berbatov plundered his first two goals for the Cottagers, while Norwich were held 0-0 at home earlier in the day by West Ham United.
