Newcastle and Sunderland U21s played in front of 1,776 people at the Sports Direct Arena
Sunderland striker Connor Wickham scored twice to give his side a draw in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League derby against Newcastle United at the Sports Direct Arena.
The 19-year-old opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a close-range shot before Newcastle’s Australian midfielder Bradden Inman scored his fifth goal in four Barclays U21 Premier League matches soon after.
Adam Campbell scored his fourth goal of the season 10 minutes before half-time to put the home side ahead before Wickham equalised from six yards out.
Sunderland, who had Louis Saha spearheading the attack, had chances to win the match in the closing stages but David Vaughan’s shot flew just wide while Adam Reed missed the target after being played in by Ji Dong Won.
Newcastle are now on seven points, one point behind Group 2 leaders Southampton, while Sunderland have two points from four matches.
