Marko Marin made his first start for Chelsea but could not prevent defeat
Newcastle United suffer their first loss of the season against Southampton
Those who came to Griffin Park on Friday night were treated to a first appearance in a Chelsea shirt for summer signing Marko Marin.
The Germany winger, who joined from Werder Bremen, continued his rehabilitation from injury but was unable to prevent Chelsea U21s from going down to a 4-1 defeat by Liverpool.
The visiting side also fielded a summer signing from the Bundesliga in Yesil, who was bought from Bayer Leverkusen.
After edging a goalless first half but Liverpool took the lead midway through the second with a header from Jack Robinson which was doubled a few minutes later with a penalty from Conor Coady.
Chelsea had hopes of getting something from the game when Patrick Bamford scored in the 80th minute but instead Krisztian and Michael Ngoo were on target.
A second-half strike from Sam McQueen condemned Newcastle United to their first defeat of the season at Whitley Park and sent Southampton top of Group 2.
One positive for Newcastle was that Sammy Ameobi played a full match as he recovers from a hamstring injury suffered in a pre-season match.

Grzegorz Sandomierski and Nuno Henrique played their first matches for Blackburn Rovers but were unable to get past Bolton in a goalless stalemate at Ewood Park.
The closest to a goal came in the 51st minute when Henrique's header was well saved and Blackburn could not convert during the subsequent goalmouth scramble.
There was also a draw in the final Friday match where Reading were held 1-1 at home to Everton.
Matt Partridge put the home side ahead on 21 minutes but the lead was cancelled before half-time with a powerful header from Everton defender Shane Duffy.
