Murtough to take key Premier League role

Premier League appoint John Murtough as Head of Elite Performance

The Barclays Under-21 Premier League is a key part of the new youth development system

The Premier League has made a key appointment to its Youth Development Department with John Murtough joining as Head of Elite Performance.

Murtough, who has over 15 years’ experience with Premier League clubs, joins from Everton FC where he was Head of Performance.
 
Murtough, who reports to Premier League Director of Youth Ged Roddy for the newly created position, will play a key role in supporting Premier League and Football League clubs to implement all aspects of elite performance in the new youth development system.

"There is a huge amount of work to be done on the pitch and in the classrooms as clubs strive to create elite training and development environments.

"John Murtough is respected and renowned as an expert in the marginal gains that can be made by applying sports science, nutrition, medicine and psychology to football development.
 
"John played a central role in making Everton’s Finch Farm one of the leading Academies in this country and he is a fantastic addition to our youth team at the Premier League. We would like to thank the management and executive staff of Everton for their cooperation in John’s appointment."
 
Murtough will be responsible for managing the elite performance functions within the youth system.

He will lead the support, development and delivery of leadership programmes for key Academy staff. He will also build upon the performance analysis and analytics work that has been launched as part of the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP).

Murtough will coordinate national benchmarking of data relating to fitness, injury audits and player productivity and will work with the Youth Team at the Premier League to ensure measurement, analysis and reporting of the EPPP.

Challenge

Murtough joined the performance team at Everton in 1997 straight from Liverpool John Moores University where he gained a Masters in Sports Science, staying with the club until 2004 when he became Academy Manager at Fulham.

He was with the Cottagers for four years before rejoining Everton as Head of Performance.  He will take up his new position as Head of Elite Performance on 5 November 2012.
