Richard Scudamore, the CEO of the Premier League, was awarded Sport Business Person of the Year for the second time at the BT Sport Industry Awards on Thursday.
"The League keeps getting bigger and bigger, and better and better, and a huge part of that is down to Richard's work"
Scudamore received his trophy from Everton captain Phil Neville, one of just 10 players to have made over 500 appearances in the Barclays Premier League, who paid tribute to the work undertaken by the chief executive over the last 14 years.
“I've been very fortunate to play in this league for my whole career,” said the former Manchester United and England player. “It keeps getting bigger and bigger, and better and better, and a huge part of that is down to Richard's work. It's a real honour to be here tonight to present this award.”
Scudamore, who becomes the first person to win the award twice having also received it in 2005, was recognised for his commercial achievements over the last 12 months which include extending the league’s title sponsorship deal with Barclays. He also oversaw the sale of a record television rights package, confirming the Premier League as the most valuable asset in football.
“I've been very blessed," said Scudamore. "I've been doing this job for a lot of years and the clubs have always supported me in that time. They work hard and spend the money to make this league as strong as it can be. It's been an amazing year for the Barclays Premier League – we've exceeded our expectations in terms of rights and we're looking forward to continuing to grow.”
The results achieved by Scudamore over the last year are a reflection of what the league has accomplished since he was appointed Premier League CEO in 1999. The Barclays Premier League has become the most watched football league in the world, which is broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and boasts a TV audience of 4.7 billion people.
The award for Sport Business Person of the Year recognises the most praiseworthy commercial accomplishment over the last 12 months. Past winners have included the London 2012 Sponsorship Sales Team (2011), Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (2010), Arsenal FC for the Emirates Stadium build (2007) and Sir Keith Mills, vice-chairman, London 2012 Olympic bid.
