Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has hailed the work of the Premier League Players' Kit Scheme after delivering a set of kit and equipment to a local school.
The 27-year-old dropped in at the Pinehurst Primary School in Liverpool to hand over the kit as part of the programme which provides free Nike team strips and training equipment for schools, clubs and youth organisations.
The scheme, a partnership between the Premier League and the Professional Footballers' Association, involves players from each Barclays Premier League club donating £25,000 per club to create a £500,000 fund for the kit.
It began in 2011 and aims to benefit teams particularly from areas in most need of assistance. More than 1,000 teams have been selected to receive kits through the programme.
"This is a day they will remember for a long time to come"
"Today has been great seeing all the smiles on the kids' faces," said Enrique. "This scheme is fantastic. We all know that grassroots football is important because that’s where we all start out and we know that it’s important to have the right kit and equipment available."
Enrique also hosted a Spanish lesson, during which he answered questions in his native language, as well as presenting a number of signed Liverpool prizes to the children for their contributions in class.
"I really enjoyed the class and I was very impressed with how good they were at speaking in Spanish," Enrique said. "It's important for us as players and role models to get involved in the community."
Senior teacher Kris Farrell thanked Enrique for visiting the school and added that for the children, the event would live long in the memory.
"It’s been great for the kids to have Jose here today," said Farrell. "Most of the children don't have kits like the ones Jose has donated, so it will definitely give them an extra boost to go out and play sport.
"The Spanish class was definitely unique and amazing for the kids. This is a day they will remember for a long time to come."
