Shoulder surgery rules out Allen for rest of season

Liverpool midfielder to have an operation on his injured shoulder on Thursday

Midfielder Joe Allen joined Liverpool from Swansea City last summer

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has been ruled out for the rest of the season after the club confirmed that he will undergo surgery on his shoulder on Thursday.

The 23-year-old has been suffering with a long-standing problem to his left shoulder and on Saturday he was forced off at half-time of Liverpool's 3-1 defeat by Southampton.

Allen also pulled out of the Wales squad for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Scotland and Croatia and it has been decided that he should have the operation now.

"Joe Allen is due to have a left shoulder operation tomorrow [Thursday] morning in Liverpool and will be ready to return to football at the beginning of next season," Liverpool first-team doctor Zaf Iqbal told the club's official website.

Allen joined Liverpool from Swansea City last summer and has made 27 League appearances for the Reds.
