Liverpool's Luis Suarez first to 20 in Barclays Race for Golden Boot

Liverpool striker praises his manager as he reaches goalscoring landmark

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has won the Barclays Race for the Golden Boot "20-goal" Award after being the first player this season to reach 20 Barclays Premier League goals.

The striker surpassed the mark when scoring a hat-trick against Wigan Athletic last weekend, reaching 21 goals but has said that luck and his team-mates have played a big part in achieving the landmark.

On receiving the award Suarez said: "As a striker you need a little luck and the luck that deserted last season I am enjoying this season. When the ball is coming is over it is going in this time, when last year it didn’t."

While Suarez admitted that he has the "in-born" instinct for goals that a genuine striker requires he was grateful for the role that his Liverpool team-mates have played to help him, especially the additions made up front during the January transfer window with Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea and Philippe Coutinho from Inter Milan.

"I want to highlight the progress the team have made," he said. "In the last few games we have started to play some excellent football and the work and the progress the lads have been making have really helped me.

"Daniel is a fantastic player and has done really well since he first arrived and along with Felipe Coutinho has been very important to the club. It has given us a lot more options and teams before were obviously worried about the guys on the field at the time, but now we have other options we can turn to and maybe those two are the ones who can make the difference in giving us more cutting edge to break teams down."

With the prospect of Tottenham Hotspur coming to Anfield on Sunday in the Barclays Premier League, Suarez would rather his team win than he had to his 21-goal tally.

"Spurs are ahead of us so it’s a chance for us to close up on them so let’s hope we can put in a good performance and close that gap," he said.
