Barclays U21s: Spurs confirm Elite superiority

Convincing win at Hawthorns extends lead while Reading also triumph in Group 2

There were two matches in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League second phase on Monday, with the leaders of the Elite Group and Group 2 reasserting their superiority.

Spurs confirmed their position as leaders of the Elite Group with a comprehensive victory at The Hawthorns.

After Jonathan Miles, the Spurs goalkeeper, had made a double save while the match was goalless, Spurs quickly went into a two-goal lead. Nabil Bentaleb opened the scoring from Kenny McEvoy’s cross and, five minutes later, Dean Parrett doubled the lead.

Spurs, who had first-team player Tom Huddlestone in midfield, went into the break 3-0 up after Cristian Ceballos won and converted a penalty.

The 20-year-old Spaniard created the fourth with a cross that Bentaleb headed in as Spurs moved to 22 points from nine matches, seven points clear of Manchester United in second.

Reading 1-0 Stoke City

A late goal from Jake Cooper was enough to beat Stoke City at Hogwood Park and extend Reading’s lead at the top of Group 2.

After a goalless first half, both sides had chances to break the deadlock. Alex McCarthy, returning from injury in the Reading goal, thwarted a one-on-one opportunity before Cooper pounced on a loose ball from a corner.

The Group 2 match between Norwich City and Newcastle United was postponed because of the bad weather.
