Czechs and Greeks progress at Euro 2012

Russia and hosts Poland go out of tournament after narrow defeats

  • Petr Jiracek's goal put the Czechs through and ended Poland's hopes at Euro 2012

  • Giorgios Karagounis scored the only goal as Greece put Russia out of the tournament

Czech Republic 1-0 Poland

Greece 1-0 Russia

Greece and the Czech Republic upset the odds to win their final Group A matches and qualify for the quarter-finals of Euro 2012.

The Czechs earned a narrow win over Poland - which ended the hosts' participation in the tournament - thanks to a smart finish from Petr Jiracek midway through the second half.

Greece's win was seemingly even less likely, Giorgios Karagounis scoring the only goal to oust their Russian opponents, who had began their campaign in such style with a 4-1 thumping of the Czech Republic.

Czech Republic top the group with six points and two wins from their three matches.

Greece and Russia both finished with four points from their matches, but the head-to-head rule ensured Fernando Santos's side's progress.
