Cape Verde Islands scorer Platini is tracked by Liverpool and Morocco's Oussama Assaidi
South Africa's Bernard Parker dribbles his way through Angola's midfield
South Africa got their Africa Cup of Nations campaign on track with their victory of the tournament against Angola, while Aston Villa midfielder Karim El Ahmadi and Liverpool winger Assaidi Oussama had to make do with a draw as Morocco were pegged back by the Cape Verde Islands.
The tournament hosts took the lead on the half-hour mark through centre-back Siyabonga Sangweni, who volleyed in Bafana Bafana's first goal of the tournament at the far post, before Lehlohonolo Majoro added a second from a tight angle in the second half. The win took Gordon Igesund’s charges clear at the Group A summit by two points from Cape Verde Islands and Morocco, who drew in Durban.
Aston Villa midfielder Karim El Ahmadi and Liverpool winger Oussama Assaidi again featured from the start but found themselves behind on 35 minutes when Platini produced Cape Verde's first-ever Nations Cup goal with a deft chip. Half-time substitute Youssef El-Arabi came to the North African outfit’s rescue with a 78th-minute equaliser.
More Barclays Premier League players will be in action today as Ghana take on Group B leaders Mali, for whom Queens Park Rangers midfielder Samba Diakite and West Ham United striker Modibo Maiga will hope to make an impact. Meanwhile, Youssouf Mulumbu, of West Bromwich Albion, will be aiming to steer DR Congo to their first victory of the campaign against Niger.
