Chelsea made a winning start to the second phase of their Barclays Under-21 Premier League campaign as they overcame Fulham 2-0 in their opening Qualification Group Tier 1 encounter at Cobham Training Ground.

With club captain John Terry returning from his knee injury to marshall the defence for the opening 45 minutes under the watchful eye of manager Rafael Benitez, the Blues proved hard to break down and emerged victorious thanks to second-half strikes by Islam Feruz and Lewis Baker.

Feruz helped himself to his sixth goal of the season when he pounced on a mistake by goalkeeper Jesse Joronen, whom he lobbed from long range on 62 minutes. The hosts then doubled their lead when Baker scored from the penalty spot after Milan Lalkovic's cross was handled by Sean Kavanagh.

Though there were chances at both ends in the closing stages, the Blues, who need to finish top of their seven-team group in order to reach the play-off for a semi-final place, held on for the victory, while Terry emerged unscathed from his run-out.
