An education programme run by Arsenal has received an award for helping to boost the study of languages.
Arsenal's Double Club Languages programme was awarded the 2012 Threlford Memorial Cup by The Chartered Institute of Linguists. The programme, which started in 1998, uses Arsenal and football-related resources to motivate pupils in local schools by linking the national curriculum with practical football sessions.
The award was given to the programme for the work in tackling sector segregation and gender imbalance in language study across a wide range of languages in a unique and enjoyable manner. Arsenal in the Community representatives Steve Eadon and Samir Singh were presented the award by Prince Michael of Kent.
A delegation of French politicians recently were impressed by the work that the Double Club was doing on a visit to understand how such community projects run by football clubs could be imitated in France.
"It was great to see that they were taking care of the community around the stadium, not only the kids in school," said Francois Courant, the deputy press counsel at the French embassy.
