Chelsea trio triumph at Africa Cup of Nations

Blues team-mates Victor Moses, John Obi Mikel and Kenneth help Nigeria win Africa Cup of Nations

  • Kenneth Omeruo helps Nigeria keep a clean sheet in the Africa cup of Nations final

  • Victor Moses proved a constant thorn in Burkina Faso's side in Nigeria's 1-0 win

Chelsea’s Victor Moses, John Obi Mikel and Kenneth Omeruo will return from South Africa in triumphant mood after helping Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations for the third time.

Moses, who had to overcome an ankle injury that forced him off during the second half of the semi-final, was instrumental in the winning goal, while Mikel was voted Man of the Match for his solid midfield display, as all three Blues players lasted the full 90 minutes to help the Super Eagles overcame surprise package Burkina Faso in the final.

The 23-year-old Moses caused the Burkinabe no end of problems throughout the match, switching flanks and troubling both opposing full-backs with his pace and guile, and it was from his centre that Nigeria scored the only goal of the match.

After the underdogs failed to clear Moses’s cross at the end of the first half midfielder Sunday Mba picked up the loose ball, flicking it over Mohamed Koffi with his right foot before unleashing a fine volley with his left.

Both Mikel and Moses will be back in time for Chelsea’s next Barclays Premier League match, against Manchester City on 24 February, while 19-year-old centre-back Omeruo will return to Dutch Eredivisie side Den Haag, where he is on loan until the end of the season.
