Rising stars win England calls

Ryan Bertrand, Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore in squad to face Italy on August 15th

Ryan Bertrand has made eight Barclays Premier League appearances for Chelsea

Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea's Ryan Bertrand have all won England call-ups for the forthcoming friendly international against Italy.

Defender Caulker, 20, who featured in Great Britain's Olympic team, recently signed a four-year deal at Spurs after a successful loan spell at Swansea City during 2011/12.

Team-mate Livermore, 22, made 23 Barclays Premier League appearances for Spurs in midfield in 2011/12.

Bertrand, 23, who played in the final of the UEFA Champions League for champions Chelsea, will vie with Caulker, team-mate Gary Cahill, Everton's Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka and Spurs' Kyle Walker for a defensive starting spot.

Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy, who was cruelly ruled out of UEFA Euro 2012 after picking up an injury in the run-up to the tournament, is named as one of three keepers.

Ruddy makes the squad along with Joe Hart of Manchester City and Jack Butland of Birmingham City.

Michael Carrick of Manchester United makes the squad for the first time since 2010, alongside team-mates Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young.

Andy Carroll of Liverpool, Tottenham's Jermain Defoe, Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge and Arsenal's Theo Walcott are named as manager Roy Hodgson's four strikers.

The match against Italy takes place at the Stade de Suisse in Berne, Switzerland on Wednesday August 15th.

Tottenham's Gareth Bale is among the Barclays Premier League stars named in Wales' squad for their friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina at Llanelli on the same night.

Three Reading players, Chris Gunter, Simon Church and Hal Robson-Kanu make the Wales squad as do three Swansea City stars, Neil Taylor, Ashley Williams and Joe Allen.
