International friendlies round-up: Defoe fells Italy

Jermain Defoe helps England sink Italy; Santi Cazorla and Jan Vertonghen among the goals

  • Jermain Defoe celebrates his winning goal against Italy in Berne

  • Santi Cazorla (third from left) opened the scoring for Spain against Puerto Rico

  • Shane Ferguson scored for Northern Ireland in the 3-3 draw with Finland

Jermaine Defoe scored the winning goal as England came from behind to edge victory against Italy, while Santi Cazorla and Jan Vertonghen were also among the goalscorers in Wednesday night's international friendlies.

England 2-1 Italy

Seven weeks on from their UEFA Euro 2012 quarter-final defeat by Italy on penalties, England gained some measure of revenge by battling back to seal their first victory against the Azzurri since 1997.

Though Italy started the brighter of the two sides and took the lead on the quarter-hour mark when captain Daniele De Rossi headed in a corner from former West Ham United forward Alessandro Diamanti, England responded well to the setback.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka levelled the score with a diving header, on 27 minutes, bravely connecting with Frank Lampard’s corner and Tottenham Hotspur's Jermain Defoe came off the bench to beat Salvatore Sirigu with a rasping drive from the edge of the area with 11 minutes remaining.

Belgium 4-2 Netherlands

Romelu Lukaku and Jan Vertonghen were both on target as Belgium stunned their neighbours with a second-half rally.

After going 2-1 behind in the second half, the Red Devils hit back with Christian Benteke’s second goal of the game and two quickfire strikes by Lukaku, who joined West Bromwich Albion on loan from Chelsea this month, and Tottenham Hotspur defender Vertonghen.

Puerto Rico 1-2 Spain

Santi Cazorla and Cesc Fàbregas scored first-half goals for the European and world champions, who extended their unbeaten run to 12 matches.

New Arsenal midfielder Cazorla struck three minutes before the interval with a low drive before former Gunners captain Fabregas doubled Spain’s lead with a volley on the stroke of half-time.

Although the hosts hit back after the break Vicente Del Bosque’s side held on for the win.

In other matches, Fulham's John Arne Riise and Brede Hangeland scored in Norway’s 3-2 defeat by Greece,  Newcastle United’s Shane Ferguson was on target for Northern Ireland in their 3-3 draw with Finland, while Wales went down 2-0 at home to Bosnia.

Chelsea midfielder Oscar hit a post but failed to find the scoresheet during Brazil’s 3-0 victory over Sweden, while Argentina and Scotland triumphed 3-1 against Germany and Australia respectively.
