Barclays U21s: Spurs fall to Macheda brace

A strong Man Utd lineup seals narrow win thanks to Federico Macheda double

  • Anders Lindegaard made a series of good saves to thwart Tottenham

Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham

Federico Macheda scored twice as Manchester United registered their second successive Barclays Under-21 Premier League victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

With free entry for United season-ticket holders and members and tickets priced at just priced at £5 for adults and £2 concessions, the crowd at Altrincham FC's Moss Lane got the chance to witness a strong home line-up edge an exciting encounter in Group 2.

Jonny Evans, Darren Fletcher, Anders Lindegaard and new signings Nick Powell and Alexander Buttner were among the starters and it took them just 70 seconds to carve out an advantage.

Ryan Tunnicliffe won the ball in midfield and sent through Macheda on goal to score with a deflected effort after his initial shot had been blocked by Jordan Archer.

Buttner clearance

There were chances for both sides as Powell had a shot blocked for the home side and Andros Townsend, Iago Falque and Harry Kane passed up opportunities for the Londoners.

Buttner had to make a goal-line clearance at the start of the second period before Macheda extended the lead with a 50th-minute penalty after Powell had been felled by Adam Smith.

With 10 minutes remaining Ryan Mason halved the deficit with a spot-kick awarded for a foul on Kane by the Red Devils' captain Scott Wootton but United held on.
