Chelsea had to come from behind to beat Sunderland and climb to third place in the Barclays Premier League. Paolo Di Canio, the new Sunderland manager, saw his side take a shock half-time lead at Stamford Bridge when Cesar Azpilicueta deflected John O’Shea’s header into his own net just before the break.

Soon after the teams re-emerged Chelsea were level as Sunderland defender Kevin Kilgallon put the ball into his own net from Simon Mignolet’s save. Chelsea’s winner also had a touch of good fortune as David Luiz’s shot was deflected in by Branislav Ivanovic.

The three points put Chelsea on 58 points, above Tottenham Hotspur on goal difference, while Sunderland could drop into the bottom three should Wigan Athletic beat Queens Park Rangers later in the day.

A goal in the 93rd minute by Papiss Cisse secured a vital win for Newcastle United over Fulham to ease their fears of getting caught up in the relegation battle.

Newcastle had dominated the match but Fulham’s defence looked to have claimed a point when in injury time, Cisse flicked up Yohan Cabaye’s shot and volleyed it into the net.

The three points took Newcastle up to 13th with 36 points, while Fulham remain in 10 th on 39 points.
