Aston Villa lifted themselves out of the relegation zone of the Barclays Premier League with a 3-1 win over Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
Gabriel Agbonlahor opened the scoring but Stoke equalised after half-time through Michael Kightly. Matthew Lowton restored Villa’s lead with a stunning volley and Christian Benteke made sure of the three points that took Villa up to 16th, above Wigan Athletic and Sunderland, who play tomorrow. Stoke sank to 14th and are on 34 points, one above Villa and four away from the relegation zone.
Arsenal climbed to fourth after a gritty 2-1 victory away to West Bromwich Albion. Two goals either side of half-time from Tomas Rosicky earned the victory but Arsenal had to hang on after Per Mertesacker was sent off conceding the penalty from which James Morrison halved the deficit. The win took Arsenal above Chelsea, who take on Sunderland at home tomorrow and to within a point of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who host Everton tomorrow.
A point for Norwich City at home to Swansea City was enough to lift them above Stoke into 13th place. Michu put Swansea ahead but Roberto Snodgrass and Michael Turner turned the match around before Luke Moore equalised for Swansea.
Earlier in the day, Reading’s hopes of a fightback to avoid relegation were hit by a 2-0 defeat at home to Southampton. Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana got the goals against their former manager Nigel Adkins.
