Schwarzer first overseas player to join 500 club

40-year-old Fulham goalkeeper reaches landmark against Arsenal

Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on Saturday became the ninth player to make 500 appearances in the Barclays Premier League when he faced Arsenal.

The 40-year-old Australian, who made his debut in the Barclays Premier League for Middlesbrough against Sheffield Wednesday in 1997, is the second goalkeeper after David James to reach the milestone and the first player from outside the United Kingdom to do so.

The majority of Schwarzer’s matches (332) in the Barclays Premier League were in the colours of Middlesbrough, while over the 500 matches the goalkeeper has kept 148 clean sheets and made more than 2,500 saves.
