Barclays U21s: Man United move second as Tottenham reach last four

United move up to second in Elite Group after 1-0 win over Saints; Spurs qualify for semi-finals

Manchester United's Nick Powell helped his side seal a narrow 1-0 win over Southampton

Manchester United moved back above Liverpool in the Elite Group of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League thanks to a narrow success against Southampton which confirmed Tottenham Hotspur's place in the semi-finals.

Manchester United 1-0 Southampton

Jesse Lingard was Manchester United’s matchwinner scoring the only goal of the game against Southampton to strengthen his side’s prospects of qualifying for the semi-final stage of the inaugural tournament.

Warren Joyce's side gave an impressive display with the lively Lingard hitting the outside of the post early on, Nick Powell dragging a shot wide and Ryan Tunnicliffe blazing over before half-time.

The hosts took the lead within 20 seconds of the restart when substitute Reece James played in Lingard, who burst into the area before firing low past Cody Cropper. United might have doubled their lead when Powell flicked a corner on to Tom Thorpe, whose powerful goalbound header was blocked on the line by Corby Moore.

Lingard's strike proved sufficient to earn a home victory against the fourth-placed Saints and Joyce’s charges now lie second, a point above Liverpool.

The result means that Tottenham Hotspur, who are eight points clear of United and 11 clear of fourth-placed Southampton, have become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals.

There are two more semi-final places up for grabs from the Elite Group, while runaway leaders Spurs, can secure top spot in the division if they avoid defeat against United at Salford City Stadium on Monday.
