Mancini praises Richards' performance

Man City boss impressed by defender's display as his side extend winning streak

Micah Richards scored one and won a penalty in the victory over Newcastle

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini praised Micah Richards after the full-back's star showing as the Barclays Premier League leaders earned a 3-1 win over Newcastle United.

In-form Richards, who many thought should have been included in the England squad for the recent friendlies against Spain and Sweden, scored one goal and was brought down for a penalty.

His impressive performances this season have won praise and Mancini said: "I love Micah Richards as a guy and a player.

"I'd like it if he plays always like he did on Saturday."

City scored twice from the penalty spot against Newcastle and Mancini made special mention of 21-year-old Italian striker Mario Balotelli, who netted the first spot-kick in cool fashion.

"The penalty from Mario was fabulous," Mancini said. "It is impossible for him to miss one penalty - I don't know why.

"I'm just helping him not to waste his talent and to make sure he becomes the player he can become. The rest is down to him and he is doing very well."
