Wigan win means Blackburn are relegated

A late Antolin Alcaraz goal safeguards Wigan's Barclays Premier League status

Defender Antolin Alcaraz headed the winner for Wigan Athletic late in the match

Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Wigan Athletic

A late goal from Antolin Alcaraz earned Wigan Athletic a win that ensures they will play in the Barclays Premier League next season, but consigned Blackburn Rovers to relegation from the top flight.

Blackburn needed a victory to give themselves any hope of staying up and their best effort fell to Yakubu early in the second half but his effort was cleared off the line.

Wigan threatened with Franco di Santo having a shot saved by Paul Robinson for Wigan and Shaun Maloney heading over from close range late in the second half.

But Alcaraz headed in from a Jean Beausejour corner in the 87th minute to seal the three points for Wigan that takes them up to 15th in the table.
