Cisse strike sees off Norwich

Senegalese forward earns Newcastle three points with only goal of match

Papiss Cisse scores the winner for Newcastle with a superb volley against Norwich

Newcastle United 1-0 Norwich City

Alan Pardew's Newcastle consolidated their sixth place in the Barclays Premier League courtesy of a slender victory over Norwich at the Sports Direct Arena.

Newcastle took the lead with only 11 minutes on the clock when Jonas Gutierrez swung over a cross from the left and Papiss Cisse brilliantly diverted the ball past John Ruddy.

Demba Ba and Cisse were both denied by superb Ruddy saves before half-time, while Newcastle keeper Tim Krul had to be at his best to tip over Zak Whitbread's header shortly after the interval.

Ba scuffed a shot in front of goal late on, but Newcastle held on to secure another valuable three points.
