Shola Ameobi pounced to score in the dying stages of the match
Substitute Shola Ameobi scored in injury time to earn Newcastle a draw in a pulsating derby match against their north-east rivals Sunderland.
Sunderland led when Nicklas Bendtner scored from the penalty spot after Michael Turner had been pulled down by Mike Williamson in the area.
Newcastle forward Demba Ba headed against the crossbar just before the break and twice went close during a dominant spell in the second half.
Sunderland had Stephane Sessegnon sent off for a raised hand but looked like hanging on for the win when Simon Mignolet saved a Ba penalty, only for Ameobi to finish from close range in the 91st minute to deny them.
The visitors' captain Lee Cattermole was shown a red card by referee Mike Dean after the final whistle.
