Gerrard goal edges out Man City

Liverpool skipper scores only goal in Carling Cup first-leg win over League leaders

Steven Gerrard has been out injured for much of this season

Manchester City 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard scored the only goal as the Reds grabbed the advantage in their Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

Gerrard drilled a penalty past City keeper Joe Hart in the early stages of their first leg as the Reds captain continued his comeback after injury problems.

Barclays Premier League leaders City were below par as they slipped to a second successive defeat, following their FA Cup loss against local rivals United at the weekend.
