Villa hit by Given injury blow

Goalkeeper will miss next month of the season due to hamstring injury

Shay Given is stretchered off during Villa's 1-0 defeat at home against Man Utd

Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given is set to miss the next month of the Barclays Premier League season after suffering a hamstring injury.

Given, 35, picked up the problem in the 1-0 defeat at home against Manchester United on Saturday and had to be replaced by Brad Guzan.

Scans have shown the Republic of Ireland international has a small tear in his left hamstring which requires immediate treatment.

"It is disappointing to lose Shay in such circumstances," said Villa manager Alex McLeish. "But unfortunately these things happen in football.

"We have to meet these challenges and we will. We have total faith in Brad who, as I said after the match on Saturday, can be proud of the way he stepped in when Shay had to come off.

"We will need within the football club for everybody to stick together and that strength of unity will help massively."

Villa have also revealed on the club's official website (avfc.co.uk) that they are awaiting the results of a scan undergone by on-loan midfielder Jermaine Jenas, who was also stretchered off against Man Utd.
