Vidic to miss rest of season

Manchester United skipper ruled out with serious knee injury

Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic injured himself against Basel

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that injured skipper Nemanja Vidic will miss the rest of the season.

The Serbian defender injured his knee in United's Champions League defeat in Basel in midweek.

And Ferguson said he will need an operation after suffering ligament damage that will keep him out for the remainder of the 2011/12 campaign.

"We thought it was a bad one," said Ferguson. "He's out for the season. It's not unexpected but it's still bad news."

Vidic fell awkwardly challenging Basel forward Marco Streller in the opening half of their crucial Champions League group match and was stretchered off the field.

The 30-year-old has already had one spell on the sidelines this season, having spent two months out with a calf problem he suffered against West Brom on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season.
