Newcastle's Guthrie faces six-week lay-off

Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie is set for a lengthy lay-off after suffering a groin injury.

The 24-year-old picked up the problem during the club's 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League on 3 December.

Guthrie has started five League matches in a row after an injury to Newcastle star Cheik Tiote, but now manager Alan Pardew must do without the former Liverpool trainee.

"Danny is definitely out of the weekend and it looks like it could be a four or a six-week job," said Pardew, who takes his team to Carrow Road to face Norwich City on Saturday.

After a fine start to the season, Newcastle have suffered a spate of injuries in recent weeks, with striker Leon Best and centre-backs Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini as well as Tiote all afflicted.

The likes of Dan Gosling, Alan Smith and Haris Vuckic will all be vying for a starting place in Guthrie's absence.
