Villa win Barclays Premier Reserve League South

Aston Villa beat Sunderland to claim fourth title in the past five years

Aston Villa's reserves claimed their fourth title in five years

Aston Villa beat Sunderland 2-0 on Tuesday to claim their fourth Barclays Premier Reserve League South title in five years.

Michael Drennan hit both goals in the win against the Black Cats 2-0 at the Academy of Light.

The victory ensures that Villa's main rivals, West Bromwich Albion and Arsenal, can no longer overhaul them.

Kevin MacDonald’s second string recently suffered back to back defeats against Manchester United and Liverpool, but held their nerve to secure the title on Wearside thanks two goals from Irish striker Drennan

Villa now face a national play-off final against the Northern champions, who are most likely to be Manchester United, which will be held at the northern winners venue on the week commencing May 14th.

The reserves play all of their South division rivals twice and all of the North section teams once to make up their 22 league fixtures.
