Superb Wigan claim vital win over Arsenal

In-form Latics boost survival hopes with first-ever victory at Emirates Stadium

Wigan Athletic have now won four of their last five Barclays Premier League matches

Arsenal 1-2 Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic boosted their hopes of staying in the Barclays Premier League with a stunning victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Latics came into the match on the back of recent victories over Liverpool, Stoke and Manchester United and they silenced the home support with two early strikes.

Franco Di Santo put Wigan ahead after only seven minutes, finishing off a fine counterattack after edging the ball past Wojciech Szczesny and stroking home into an empty net.

Wigan doubled their lead less than two minutes later, Jordi Gomez prodding home at the second attempt from close range.

Thomas Vermaelen pulled a goal back for the Gunners and although they pushed for an equaliser, Wigan were able to hang on for a crucial win that leaves them five points clear of the relegation zone.
